THE FIE AND THE DGPE PROVIDE CLARIFICATIONS ON RADIO PULSAR

matinale1

The Director General of the Environmental Intervention Fund (FIE), Delwendé Davy NANEMA and Maria ZONGO, Head of the Pollution and Nuisance Prevention Department at the General Directorate for Environmental Preservation (DGPE) were guests on Radio Pulsar's morning show this Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

At the heart of the discussions was the entry into force of Law 045-2024 / ALT of December 30, 2024, concerning plastic packaging and bags in Burkina Faso. This law now bans plastic bags in Burkina Faso.

Questions included: Why ban the use of plastic bags? What are the dangers for humans and animals? What will happen to current stocks? Will they be seized? Will traders be compensated? What alternatives are available to the public?

It is important to remember, from the remarks of the two guests on Radio Pulsar, that the Burkinabe government decided to ban plastic bags, above all, to protect the population from the harmful effects of the plastic peril. Indeed, they stated, plastic bags are a source of various dangerous diseases, destroy the environment, kill animals, and impoverish the soil.

They urged industry players to adapt to the new provisions in force in Burkina Faso, as the law will be enforced after the six-month deadline. Those with stocks of plastic bags are encouraged to declassify them and contact the General Directorate for Environmental Protection (DGPE) for instructions on how to destroy them.

As for alternatives, the show's guests suggested that efforts are underway to produce enough of them. Indeed, the Ministry of the Environment, through the FIE (French Environmental Investment Fund), has taken the lead by launching Call for Projects No. 4, worth nearly 2 billion CFA francs, to support developers operating in this field. With this in mind, approximately 18 million alternatives will be available on the market in the coming months.

Similarly, through the "one household, one ecological bag" initiative, ecological bags will soon be on the market, at social prices, in order to allow as many Burkinabe as possible to obtain them.

For our health and the preservation of the environment, let's change our habits! Let's use eco-friendly bags from now on!
